Welcome to the home of Unit 549, covering San Diego's North County Inland. From this home page, you'll find links to our Clubs (where we play), results (how you did), upcoming Tournaments (what we're looking forward to), the Unit 549 newsletter (what's up with who and when), and the latest on your Unit 549 Board (what they're doing to help make your bridge experience better all the time) - and more. We welcome your visit here and to any of the area Clubs in Unit 549!
I retired five years ago and Joan and I moved to the San Diego area to be closer to our daughter and grandkids. So I went from 55 hours of work a week in a place that we had lived for 45 years to zero hours of work in a place where I knew no one but family. As I was nearing retirement I started to rekindle my interest in duplicate bridge and was playing two or three times a month. So it was only natural for me to look to duplicate bridge to fill some of those hours and meet some new people. What I discovered was quite amazing. Not only was duplicate bridge alive and well here but there was bridge every day of the week both mornings and afternoons, something we didn't have in Madison, Wisconsin. Since then I've made another discovery. Duplicate bridge is alive and well here because of a large group of committed volunteers who really love duplicate bridge.
Liz Nixon is a perfect example of one of those committed volunteers. She has served on the Unit Board so long that I'm afraid to ask how long it has been in fear of the fact she will think it has been too long. Her formal position is the Board's Recording Secretary but she does so much more. When you read the Forum each month you will find a long piece in there about the comings and goings of the unit thanks to Liz. She compiles most of the information that is used to produce Table Talk each month. And she coordinates the very successful Audrey Grant program the Unit has sponsored every year for the last 10 years or so. On behalf of Unit Board and the members of Unit 549 I would like to thank Liz for all of that volunteer time she has and continues to give to duplicate bridge.
Mark your calendar, Sheila Latus is going to be 75 on May 6th. and she isn't being bashful about it. There will be a "living wake" at the North County Bridge Club before the open game on May 8th to celebrate her becoming so old. And the family (Sheila) will be providing lunch, which is customary after such somber events. I've heard it will be Chinese cuisine, so don't miss it.
Our next unit game will be May 21st. Please note that this is a Sunday. The Pavilion and Conference Center got booked with bigger events for all of May so we got bumped to a Sunday.
